Nutrition Supplements – Questions of When, Why and Who
If you’re focused on maintaining good health and staying fit, you’re probably eating the right food and exercising regularly. And you’re also probably wondering if and why you should augment your diet with nutritional supplements. Supplements are good, for a variety of reasons.
• They prevent the onset of diseases: Supplements provide you with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that are missing in your diet and which are needed to reduce your risk of being affected by chronic diseases.
• It’s difficult to get your minimum requirements from food alone: We eat what’s put on our plate or what we choose from a menu, which means that there’s no time to add up the nutritive values of each item on our plates. There’s a high probability that we may miss out on most nutrients in the bargain, and this is why it’s good to go for supplements.
• The degradation of fruits and vegetables: The fresher produce is, the more it retains its natural goodness. And this is why an orange that’s newly plucked is chock-full of Vitamin C while the one that comes to your dining table after a few days in cold storage loses most of its nutritive value and taste. So even if you’re a health freak who eats mostly fruits and vegetables, you’re unlikely to be getting as many nutrients as you think you are, and this is where supplements are useful.
There are some people who need supplements more than others, and these are:
• The Elderly: When you grow old, your body and its functions start to deteriorate. And so you need more calcium to keep your bones strong and more Vitamin D to make sure the calcium is absorbed by your bones. You’re also in need of Vitamin B12 and other supplements to keep you in good health and prevent illness.
• The soon-to-be mothers: Pregnant women need to supplement their diets with adequate amounts of folic acid, iron and vitamins so that they don’t become anemic and the baby they’re carrying is not born with defects of any kind.
• Those on a restricted diet: Extremely obese people may be put on diets that restrict their food habits severely. They may lose weight, but they also end up losing vital nutrients. Supplements come in handy at times like these.
• Those recovering from an illness: Your body is weak and needs additional succor to get back to normal.
• Those who don’t eat meat or dairy products: Vegans are in dire need of calcium supplements since they don’t touch meat or dairy products.
A word of caution is necessary at this point – nutritive supplements must be used only as supplements that complements your food and not as the main course. Your body needs the required amount of carbohydrates, sugars, fats and proteins that only regular food can provide.
