The relationship between vitamins and certain diseases has been studied by scientists. A comprehensive review of nearly 40 years worth of research was published in the Journal of American Medical Association back in June 2002. The review clearly demonstrates how chronic diseases such as osteoporosis, cancer, and coronary heart disease are associated with vitamin deficiencies.
The researchers located evidence that vitamin E is an important antioxidant necessary for immune function. They also found that heart disease and prostate cancer may be prevented in some people when vitamin E plays a role. Many studies have proven that certain birth defects can be helped to prevent, by taking folic acid during pregnancy. There is supportive evidence for the value of vitamins B12 and B6, and Vitamin D plays an important part in bone mass.
Based on all the findings in the review, and the recognition that not enough vitamins are in an American diet, the researchers recommended that all adults take one multivitamin daily.
